Team Rock Mill is a competitive youth climbing program designed to help youth grow as athletes and as individuals through a challenging and supportive environment. We are seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and skilled individuals to join our team as Head Climbing Coach. The ideal applicant will be passionate about climbing and dedicated to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment for young climbers of all skill levels. They will possess a strong understanding of climbing fundamentals, safety protocols, and age-appropriate coaching techniques.
Key Qualities and Skills:
- Passionate Climber: A genuine love for climbing and a personal commitment to the sport are essential. Experience in various climbing disciplines (e.g., bouldering, top-roping, lead climbing) is highly valued.
- Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills: The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with children, parents, and fellow coaches is crucial. Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude are paramount.
- Safety-Conscious: A deep understanding of climbing safety protocols and the ability to enforce them consistently and effectively is non-negotiable.
- Experience Working with Children: Previous experience coaching youth sports, teaching, mentoring, or working with children in a structured environment is highly desirable. The ability to adapt coaching styles to different age groups and learning styles is key.
- Strong Knowledge of Climbing Techniques: A solid understanding of fundamental movement skills, body positioning, and efficient climbing techniques is necessary to provide effective instruction.
- Enthusiastic and Engaging: The ability to create fun, motivating, and age-appropriate climbing sessions that keep young climbers engaged and eager to learn.
- Responsible and Reliable: Punctuality, preparedness, and a commitment to the scheduled coaching hours are essential. The ability to manage a group of young climbers effectively and responsibly is critical.
- Team Player: The ability to work collaboratively with other coaches and staff members to create a supportive and cohesive team environment.
- Willingness to Learn and Grow: A proactive attitude towards professional development and a desire to stay updated on the latest coaching techniques and safety standards.
Requirements/Expectations:
- Lead tryout event in August to rally existing team members and meet/evaluate potential members.
- Plan and lead all team practices (3 x 2hr practices a week) during bouldering season (August - January)
- Lead and communicate with 2-3 assistant coaches on practice/lesson plans, responsibilities and expectations, arrange travel and overnight accommodations, etc.
- Coordinate with 2 recreational club coaches to ensure alignment of program with the team.
- Select and attend at least three local competitions as Team Rock Mill events, coordinate with assistant coaches to ensure proper attendance.
- Attend Regional Championship and Divisional/National competitions as needed.
- Communicate with parents and parent liaison to ensure youth and families have all the details they need.
- Communicate with management and setting team on a weekly basis to ensure Team needs are met and stay informed on any gym events/setting changes.
- Build a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork among a team of 8-19 year old climbers. Connect with the overall Rock Mill climbing community that shares the space during practices.
Beneficial Skills:
- Experience developing lesson plans and training programs for youth climbers.
- Knowledge of youth development principles and age-appropriate physical activities.
- Competition climbing experience.
- Route setting experience.
- Familiarity with the local climbing community and USA Climbing.
- First Aid and CPR Certification: While not required at the time of application, a willingness to obtain these certifications is a necessity.
The ideal youth climbing coach applicant will be more than just a skilled climber; they will be a positive role model, a dedicated mentor, and an inspiring figure who can help young climbers develop a lifelong love for the sport while prioritizing safety and fun. They will be committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every child can thrive
